A new Local Legend is out for Microsoft Flight Simulator: the Dornier Do 31

The Microsoft Flight Simulator team and iniBuilds have expanded the platform’s aircraft roster today with the introduction of a unique aircraft: the Dornier Do 31, an experimental jet-powered VTOL aircraft that is part of the Local Legend series. It’s one of the most innovative aircraft ever designed and lands on the platform on the same day that City Update 6: Southwest Germany also becomes available for MSFS.

A Pioneering Design from Cold War Germany

The Dornier Do 31, designed and built by the West German company Dornier, was a groundbreaking project initiated during the Cold War. Its development was driven by the need for a resilient air force that could operate independently of conventional runways, which were vulnerable to attack. The aircraft’s design incorporated advanced engineering to achieve vertical take-off and landing capabilities, aiming to use makeshift runways and even highways in crisis situations.

The Do 31 stood out as the only jet-powered VTOL utility and transport aircraft of its time, featuring a sophisticated layout with a high-mounted wing, cruciform tail, and a capacious fuselage designed for versatility and operational efficiency. Its power came from two Rolls-Royce Pegasus engines, supplemented by four Rolls-Royce RB-162-4D turbojets on each wingtip, providing a combined thrust that was unparalleled for such an aircraft.

A Technological Marvel

The aircraft’s technical achievements include a hybrid analog-digital flight control computer, the DO-960, which was critical in managing the complex dynamics of VTOL operations. This computer system represented a significant innovation in flight technology, blending analog and digital components to manage the aircraft’s stability and performance across different flight regimes.

The Dornier Do 31 made its maiden flight in 1967, showcasing its unique capabilities at various airshows and setting multiple records for its class. Despite its technological advancements and successful demonstrations, the project was eventually shelved in the early 1970s due to high costs and operational complexities, making the Do 31 a rare legend in the annals of aviation history.
