Seven upgraded cities and a reworked Friedrichshafen Airport.
by Vasco Ferreira

Microsoft Flight Simulator simmers have new details to explore in Europe with the release of the latest City Update for the platform. City Update 06: Southwest Germany focuses on improving key cities in the picturesque state of Baden-Württemberg and its neighboring regions, offering simmers new reasons to explore this area in the simulator.

This update introduces virtual aviators to seven meticulously modeled cities in Baden-Württemberg – Mannheim, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Esslingen, and Kehl – as well as Strasbourg in France, a vibrant city just across the German border. Friedrichshafen Airport (EDNY), a key hub in the region, has also been added, further enriching the flying opportunities for MSFS users.

Baden-Württemberg, known for its diverse landscapes that range from the Black Forest to the banks of the Danube and Lake Constance, is showcased in all its glory in this update. The state is not only a hub of culture and history but also home to a thriving economy and numerous educational institutions.

City Update 06 recreates in great details seven cities in the region:

  • Mannheim: A city of innovation, Mannheim features landmarks such as the Water Tower and the Baroque Palace.
  • Heidelberg: Famous for its romantic cityscape and the ancient university, Heidelberg presents stunning views along the Neckar River.
  • Karlsruhe: This city near the French border is laid out in a fan shape, with streets radiating from the central palace, which is a focal point in this update.
  • Stuttgart: As the state capital, Stuttgart is a critical economic center, especially for the automotive industry, and offers views of modern and historic architecture.
  • Esslingen: A city rich in medieval history, Esslingen features charming old buildings and bridges, making it a picturesque flying route.
  • Kehl and Strasbourg: Included for its cultural and historical significance, Strasbourg features iconic structures such as its cathedral and the European Parliament. Kehl, on the German side of the Rhine, is a small town just 5 km away from Strasbourg.

The cities included in City Update 06 have been recreated using high-resolution aerial imagery and feature high-fidelity TIN surface modeling.

Besides the upgraded cities mentioned above, City Update 06 also highlights the region’s aviation heritage with a bespoke rendition of Friedrichshafen Airport. This airport is celebrated for its historical significance, being closely linked to the pioneering airship manufacturer Zeppelin. The airport serves as a fitting tribute to the area’s rich aviation history and its role in the annual AERO Friedrichshafen convention.

City Update 06: Southwest Germany is available now via the Marketplace for free to all Microsoft Flight Simulator users.
