MK Studios rebuilds Vágar for MSFS 2024, their second tricky approach in one week

The Faroe Islands' only airport returns as a native v2 and is another box ticked on the developer's road to Miami.

Barely a few days after Tenerife South, MK Studios is back in the North Atlantic with a rebuilt Vágar (EKVG), the only airport in the Faroe Islands and one of the more awkward approaches you can fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Both airports share a reputation for shifting winds and unforgiving terrain, so simmers who like a bit of a fight on final now have two fresh reasons to double-check the numbers. This one arrives as a v2, rebuilt for MSFS 2024, and it lands as the second name on a short list the developer drew up earlier this year.

A short list, now half done

That list is worth a quick recap. When MK Studios confirmed Miami International was in the works, the team said two European airports would come first: Tenerife South and Vágar. Tenerife showed up on the 25th, and Vágar has now followed it out the door. With both done, Miami is next on the developer’s list, and MK Studios has said that scenery is expected to enter beta soon.

Vágar has a longer story than most regional fields. It began life as RAF Vágar in 1942, built by British Army Royal Engineers during the Second World War, then sat unused for years before civilian flights returned in 1963. A runway extension in 2011 and a new terminal in 2014 brought it closer to the airport simmers know today, one that now handles close to half a million passengers a year. Atlantic Airways, the Faroese national carrier, runs its main operation from here, with seasonal company from the likes of Icelandair and SAS.

None of that makes the approach any friendlier. The airport sits ringed by hills, catches strong gusts and fog rolling in off the Atlantic, and the runway itself is short and sloped. That’s the whole appeal of coming into this airport. Regular traffic runs to A319/A320, 737, and BAe 146 aircraft, plenty of it charter work alongside the scheduled service, so there’s room to bring in something heavier than a turboprop if you want to test yourself.

What the rebuild includes

On the technical side, the developer describes a full rebuild rather than a touch-up of the 2021 original. MK Studios says the package uses an up-to-date airport layout based on current real-world data, with detailed interior and exterior modelling of the terminal, custom ground textures on high-resolution PBR materials, accurate markings, signage and stands, plus a full set of night, taxiway and approach lighting. The team also says it optimised the scenery for performance without cutting back on visual detail, and that it sits cleanly on the MSFS terrain underneath. As with Tenerife South, this is a native MSFS 2024 product, with no MSFS 2020 version on offer.

Price and availability

Vágar v2 is out now for MSFS 2024, priced at €14,99 before tax (around €18,43 with 23% VAT). Anyone who already owns the original can take 20% off.
