FlightSim Studio (FSS) has unveiled its latest project: a complete recreation of the iconic Boeing 727-200 Freighter for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
This announcement marks a significant departure from their current lineup of modern regional jets and GA aircraft, aiming to offer a challenging and immersive experience for flight sim enthusiasts seeking a taste of aviation history.
If you’re used to the FSS E-Jets and their modern niceties (and the development challenges that entails…), prepare for an entirely new experience with the 727. The 727-200 throws pilots back to a time of complex manual systems. From managing electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to utilizing a dedicated flight engineer’s station, FSS promises an in-depth simulation that replicates the intricacies of operating this classic trijet.
FlightSim Studio’s aircraft visuals have been impressive all along, and the 727-200 will be no exception. Expect a stunning 3D model built specifically for MSFS, with high-resolution textures that capture the essence of this legendary aircraft.
Inside the cockpit, simmers will find a full suite of analog instruments, offering a realistic challenge for virtual pilots accustomed to digital displays. Navigation options cater to both traditional and modern preferences, with a time-appropriate, custom-coded Inertial Navigation System (INS) for a period-accurate experience, or opt for a more contemporary GPS unit including several Garmin options from Working Title, PMS, and TDS.
While the 727-200 promises an authentic experience, FSS acknowledges its complexity. To bridge the gap, they’ve incorporated user-friendly features, such as an EFB-like clipboard that assists with tasks like payload management, door operations, and descent calculations.
A virtual crew function, accessed through a separate menu, will help manage checklists, eliminating the need to constantly switch between stations.
The 727-200 Freighter is slated for release by the end of July 2024, though potential delays are acknowledged. FSS says that while only the Freighter variant is initially available, a passenger version is planned for the future.
Pricing remains unannounced, but it’s important to note from the get-go that this will be a full release, not an Early Access product like the E-Jets.
