FSDG moves beyond scenery and launches its own flight tracking suite for MSFS

Flight tracking has been a settled corner of this hobby for a while now. Volanta took most of the oxygen out of the room when Orbx put it out for free back in 2021, a handful of paid tools carved out the analytics side, and that was more or less that. So when a developer best known for airports and German landmark packs turns up with a free tracker, moving map and logbook that nobody saw coming, the question is whether it has anything the incumbents don’t.

That is exactly what happened this week. Flight Sim Development Group announced the FSDG Flight Suite, saying only that the team had been working on it quietly and is proud of the result. The free version went live on the FSDG website the same day, and a Pro version appeared alongside it.

What you get for nothing

The free package covers four things: automatic flight tracking, a real-time moving map, a logbook, and the statistics that go with them. FSDG says the app detects the start and end of a flight on its own, works out your departure and destination airports without input, and files everything into the built-in logbook afterwards. There is also an import function for logbooks you already have, so your existing history does not have to be abandoned.

The moving map is an area that FSDG highlights. It can be scaled to whatever size suits your setup and pinned as an always-on-top overlay while you fly, which makes it usable on a single monitor rather than requiring a tablet or a second screen. The developer also highlights a prediction line that projects where your aircraft will be in two minutes on the current track, plus optional VFR reporting points and various navaid types.

Where the €9.99 goes

Pro is a one-time purchase, priced at €9.99. Five things sit behind that paywall, according to FSDG: the Flight Analyzer, TCAS traffic on the moving map, a search function on the map, alternative map styles, and the ability to show your active flight plan on the map.
