When iniBuilds promised a full A380 reveal this month, the obvious question was whether the curtain pull would live up to seven years of anticipation. The project dates back to 2019, survived a platform change, a complete rebuild, and a long stretch of near silence before resurfacing in March as the studio’s next major aircraft. Now we have our answer: a lengthy development update covering systems, sound, cockpit and cabin work, plus the first official trailer showing the aircraft actually flying.
And if the timing of Tuesday’s Chicago O’Hare and multi-jetway announcement felt like table setting, this update confirms it. The ecosystem is being built around this aircraft, and iniBuilds clearly wants the A380 to land into a world that’s ready for it.
Lots of systems
The update spends most of its word count on systems, and it’s the section that should interest serious simmers the most. iniBuilds says the A380 features one of the most comprehensive systems environments the team has ever developed, covering the Flight Management and Guidance System with full lateral and vertical navigation, managed and selected guidance, step climbs, holds and route modifications, alongside detailed ECAM simulation with abnormal procedures, memo logic and phase-based inhibition.
The two engine variants are getting separate treatment. The developer says the Engine Alliance GP7200 and Rolls-Royce Trent 900 have been modelled independently, with their own FADEC logic, spool behaviour, thrust response and engine-specific ECAM indications. That’s the kind of detail that usually separates a flagship release from a quick port, and it mirrors the approach we’ve seen the team refine across the A350 and the TriStar.
Datalink users are covered too, with Hoppie and SayIntentions integration for CPDLC and ACARS, plus Navigraph OANS bringing airport moving maps into the cockpit. Persistent aircraft states carry fuel, hydraulics and wear items between flights on a per-livery basis, and the failure modelling includes scenarios like bird strikes, engine damage and GPS jamming.
One detail cool detail is water management. With lavatories across two decks and onboard showers in the mix, iniBuilds says crews will need to actively monitor water distribution through the Flight Attendant Panel, and neglecting it can leave washrooms inoperative in parts of the cabin. It’s a wonderfully obscure slice of real A380 operations.
Flying the beast
On the flight model side, iniBuilds says the aircraft takes full advantage of MSFS 2024’s CFD calculations across the wing and the new fuselage object system, which lets the simulator recognise the A380’s actual double-deck shape rather than a simplified profile. The team also points to its access to multiple active, type-rated A380 pilots, several of them based in the Middle East, who have been providing regular feedback on handling and performance throughout development.
We heard about real-world research trips and simulator visits back in March, so this continuous pilot feedback loop seems to be a genuine pillar of the project. Whether it translates into the feel of 560 tonnes rotating off the runway is something we’ll only know with our hands on the throttles.
An Emirates-style cabin, lounge and all
The cabin is where the A380’s identity lives, and iniBuilds has modelled the aircraft in an Emirates-style four-class configuration, complete with the forward shower spas, the onboard lounge and bar, star ceiling effects and multiple cabin lighting setups. The developer says positional audio shifts as you move through the aircraft, with the lounge even getting its own ambient background music at cruise.
A cabin of this scale is a performance risk, and the team understands that, saying optimisation work on node counts, textures, LODs and streaming is ongoing, with the modular attachment system in MSFS 2024 helping keep things in check.
What we still don’t know
There’s no release date and no price. Exterior development gets only a brief mention, with iniBuilds promising deeper showcases of the model, liveries and immersion features in future updates. Liveries for major A380 operators are expected at release.
And then there’s that teaser
The update closes with the line “as one chapter begins to unfold, another is already taking shape”, paired with a single image. It shows a T-tail business jet with an aft-mounted engine parked at night, with the Swiss registration HB-JFX on the fuselage.
iniBuilds isn’t saying what it is, but the breadcrumbs are hard to ignore. HB-JFX is a real registration belonging to a Swiss Bombardier Global 6000, and the tail and engine arrangement certainly fit the Global family. The studio has a habit of using real airframes in its teasers, so if we had to guess, and to be clear this is purely speculation at this point a Bombardier Global would be a surprising but fascinating change of pace for a team that has spent years on heavy metal.
