Just Flight promised “a little more” on the Black Square Commander 114, and they weren’t kidding. Shortly after the first teaser screenshots appeared, a full product page has gone live on the Just Flight website, complete with over 40 screenshots and a very promising feature list.
Two Commanders for the price of one. That’s one of the main details, since the package will include two aircraft: the 1977 Commander 114, and a 114 fitted with an aftermarket turbo-normalising package and aftermarket air conditioning.
That matches what developer Nick Cyganski hinted at on the Just Flight forums recently. The normally aspirated 114 is the classic low-and-slow tourer, while the turbo-normalized version, which also gets passenger and crew oxygen, turns the aircraft into a more serious high-altitude cross-country machine. The oxygen isn’t a cosmetic checkbox either, as it depletes according to pressure altitude and passenger occupancy.
Black Square says this release features the most advanced turbocharger simulation in MSFS, with turbocharger sounds that reflect turbine RPM and engine performance dependent on boost. Bold words, but this is a developer that made cabin temperature simulation a selling point, so we’re naturally inclined to take the ambition seriously.
A stormscope!
Buried in the feature list is something truly new for the platform. The 114 includes what Black Square describes as MSFS’s first working stormscope, with plausible lightning depiction for stormcell avoidance, working with both default and third-party weather injection.
It pairs nicely with the avionics philosophy here. The radio stack spans several eras of the 114’s history, from a Foster RNAV511 for GPS-free navigation to a Garmin GTN 750/650 via PMS50 or TDS, plus MX-170B radios, a KLN-90B, GNS 530/430, a System 60-2 autopilot and that stormscope.
In total there are 15 hot-swappable radio configurations managed through the tablet, up from the 12 we saw in the Caravan Professional. The product page openly encourages flying IFR to minimums with a fully analogue panel and no GPS, which is either a challenge or a threat depending on your skill level.
The little things that make it a Black Square
The list of small-aircraft quirks being simulated here is where this reveal gets fun. There’s airframe vibration and resonance, nose gear shimmy that encourages holding yoke back-pressure and careful braking, and a very cool detail: analogue instruments can become sticky without the engine running, requiring a tap on the glass to free the needles for an accurate reading.
The engine simulation goes deep into piston territory, with fouling, vapour lock, flooding and backfires, plus simulated magneto impulse couplings that even have their own sound. New rough-running audio covers excessively rich or lean mixture, detonation, fouling, cold idle and engine damage. Cold starts require engine preheating, with a heater and ground power cart included, which explains the propane tank setup spotted in yesterday’s screenshots.
The rest of the spec sheet follows the established Professional-era formula: 75+ random, scheduled or performance-triggered failures, a fully simulated environmental control system, a 55-circuit electrical system with thermal breakers, and even possible carbon monoxide leaks detectable with the onboard CO detector.
Sound is by Boris Audio Works, recorded from the real aircraft, and the developer says engine and aerodynamic performance should be within 2% of POH values. The package rounds out with ten paint schemes and six interior upholstery packages spanning five decades of service, a 150+ page manual, and 35 in-game checklists with control highlighting.
When and how much?
That’s the one thing the page doesn’t say. The listing shows “coming soon” and no pricing has been published. For reference, Nick Cyganski recently indicated on the Just Flight forums that he expects the 114 to release in June or July, with sound being the final piece of the puzzle. With the product page now live, the pieces are falling into place quickly. We’ll keep you posted!
