Black Square’s Commander 114 breaks cover with first proper screenshots, and a release is close

After 19 months of near silence, the next GA aircraft from Black Square resurfaces with six new images and a promise of more details today.

Timing is everything. On the eve of FlightSimExpo 2026, Just Flight posted six screenshots of the Black Square Commander 114 on its social channels, with a short message teasing that “a little more” would be revealed the following day. That day is today, which also happens to be the opening day of the expo in Saint Paul. If you were going to pick a moment to bring a long-quiet project back into the spotlight, this would be it!

And quiet it has been. The Commander 114 was first announced back in November 2024 when the Caravan Professional was introduced. Since then the Caravan has gone on to release and earn a spot among the best GA aircraft in the sim. The Commander, meanwhile, mostly stayed behind the curtain. Until now.

The preview images are classic Black Square, with several different exterior and interior looks of the aircraft. Look closely to the one with the EFB and you’ll spot a turbocharger and wastegate in the schematic, which lines up with what we know about the variants planned for this release. More on that in a second.

Essentially done, with a summer window

In a recent thread on the Just Flight forums, Black Square developer Nick Cyganski gave the clearest picture yet of where the project stands. According to the developer, the aircraft is essentially done with the exception of sound. Nick says he recorded audio from a real turbonormalized 114 last September, and that the 114 will be his next aircraft released, with an expected window of June or July.

That same post confirmed some welcome details about the configuration options. The release will include the aftermarket turbonormalizing package, a three-blade scimitar propeller, and an optional electric air conditioner. That turbonormalizer is exactly what the tablet schematic in these screenshots appears to depict, and it should make the 114 a more capable cross-country machine than the stock IO-540 powered airframe.

The Commander 114 occupies an interesting spot in Black Square’s lineup. This is an all-new airframe, and it’s the developer’s first piston single built from the ground up in the Professional era. The real-world Rockwell Commander 114 has a loyal following thanks to its spacious cabin and sturdy trailing-link landing gear, the kind of gear that flatters even your worst landings. It’s a type that has never had a serious study-level treatment in MSFS, so Black Square is stepping into open territory here.

If the pattern of past Black Square launches holds, expect the full feature reveal to be detailed, long, and very specific about what is and isn’t simulated. With more information promised for today and FlightSimExpo underway, we shouldn’t have to wait long. We’ll update as soon as Just Flight shares the next round of details.
