If there is one metric that flight simmers obsess over more than any other, it’s the landing rate. Over the years, the community has mostly relied on external logbooks like Volanta to judge whether a landing was “butter” or a suspension-breaking slam. However, these tools often require waiting for a post-flight log to generate.
I like simple tools so I’ve been using Arc since we featured it a while ago, but there’s a new favorite. Landing Toast is a new freeware utility by developer newbiediver that strips away the flight tracking bloat in favor of immediate, in-sim gratification. This add-on addresses a specific need for the obsessed simmer who is looking for a lightweight, aesthetically modern tool that tells you exactly how you performed the moment your wheels touch the pavement.
Set and forget
Landing Toast operates as a standalone external application whose primary strength lies in its “set and forget” capability. The developer has implemented an auto-launch feature that hooks into the simulator’s start-up process, meaning once you configure it, the tool runs in the background without further interaction.
Visually, the tool adopts a modern, “toast” notification style (hence the name) that mimics native Windows or mobile notifications. As seen in the screenshots, the UI is clean, dark-themed, and unobtrusive, displaying:
- Vertical Speed (fpm)
- G-Force
- Wind direction and speed
- Pitch and Roll attitude
It’s a presentation style that fits well with the modern design language of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
The utility was recently updated to version 1.1.0, and the developer has added a feature that arguably increases the tool’s utility even more: Auto-Recording. According to the release notes, the software can now automatically capture video footage from 800ft AGL until 20 seconds after touchdown. Nice!
Availability and Installation
Landing Toast is available for free at flightsim.to. It’s important to note that Landing Toast is an external .exe application, not a folder to be dropped into the Community directory. To install, simply extract the downloaded zip into a permanent folder in your hard drive, launch the app, set your desired preferences, and you’re good to go!
