If there is one universal truth in flight simulation, it’s that we are never satisfied with our frame rates. Just as we got comfortable with the “magic” of DLSS 4, the goalposts are moving again. At CES 2026, NVIDIA has announced DLSS 4.5, introducing a suite of features that promises to smooth out the skies, though the best toys are, predictably, locked behind the newest hardware.
6x Multi-Frame Generation
The marquee announcement is the evolution of Multi-Frame Generation (MFG). When DLSS 4 launched last year alongside the RTX 50 series, it introduced the ability to generate up to three frames for every rendered one (4x total). DLSS 4.5 pushes this further with a new 6x Dynamic Multi-Frame Generation mode.
NVIDIA claims this new “Dynamic” mode automatically adjusts the frame multiplier on the fly to hit a target framerate (e.g., 240 FPS) without the user needing to manually toggle settings. For MSFS pilots, who often oscillate between smooth cruise performance and stuttery approaches into heavy hubs like Heathrow or JFK, this dynamic scaling could theoretically eliminate those jarring frame drops on final.
However, there is a catch: MFG 6x is exclusive to the GeForce RTX 50 Series. If you are still using a very perfectly-capable RTX 4090 or older, you won’t have access to these new generation capabilities. It is a continuation of the hardware-gating trend that has become standard practice for NVIDIA, effectively inviting users to pay a four-figure entry fee just to be eligible for the latest software innovations.
The real news for MSFS simmers: a cure for “ghosting”?
While 6x frame gen grabs the headlines, the most significant news for the MSFS community is the updated 2nd Generation Transformer Model for Super Resolution. Unlike the frame gen tech, this update is coming to all RTX GPUs (20, 30, 40, and 50 series).
This matters because the current iteration of DLSS in MSFS has a “ghosting” problem that affects almost everyone, regardless of what they fly. We are all familiar with the frustration of looking at a PFD during takeoff, only to see the speed and altitude tapes turn into an unreadable smear. But the issue extends beyond the cockpit: propeller discs frequently exhibit weird trailing artifacts, and low-altitude, high-speed passes over scenery can often result in a muddy blur rather than crisp terrain.
NVIDIA explicitly states that this new AI model shifts training from “logarithmic space” to “linear space.” In plain English, this means the AI is no longer compressing lighting data to hide flickering. It can now handle high-contrast, fast-moving elements, like a bright white HUD against a dark ground, or a spinning propeller blade, without losing its temporal stability.
If these claims hold up in the sim, we might finally be able to run DLSS in “Performance” mode without sacrificing the legibility of our avionics or the crispness of our props.
Availability and Rollout
The rollout strategy is split between the software and hardware features:
- Available Now: The new 2nd Gen Transformer Model for Super Resolution can be enabled today by updating to the beta version of the NVIDIA App. It works on all RTX cards.
- Coming Spring 2026: The 6x Dynamic Multi-Frame Generation will launch later this year, exclusively for RTX 50 series owners.
