How to Enable DLSS 4 in Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Step-by-Step Guide

Get improved visuals and higher frame rates in MSFS with this DLSS 4 setup guide for NVIDIA RTX GPUs.
by Vasco Ferreira

NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology has revolutionized gaming performance in recent years, and enabling DLSS 4 in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020/2024) can significantly boost frame rates and visual quality.

Following NVIDIA’s recent driver update, simmers with RTX graphics cards found themselves puzzled about how to harness the latest GPU technologies effectively. Fortunately, as often happens in the flight simulation community, a group of dedicated members stepped up to decode the process.

The step-by-step guide below draws heavily on insights shared by Michael Ryan (aka IslandSimPilot on YouTube), whose work builds on contributions from other key figures like TenPatrol and Ianrivaldosmith.

Ready to unlock NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024? Let’s break down the process.

What You’ll Need

  • An NVIDIA RTX 20/30/40/50 series GPU.
  • The latest NVIDIA Game Ready Driver (version 572.16).
  • The NVIDIA App (replaces GeForce Experience).
  • NVIDIA Profile Inspector (for manual tweaks).

Step 1: Install the NVIDIA App & Update Drivers

  1. Download the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official site.
  2. Install the App
  3. Update Drivers: In the NVIDIA App, ensure you’re on driver version 572.16. Install updates if needed.

Step 2: Configure NVIDIA Profile Inspector

  1. Download NVIDIA Profile Inspector and extract the files.
  2. Add Custom Settings:
  1. Adjust Settings for MSFS:
  • Open Profile Inspector.
  • For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020:
    • Search for the profile, navigate to 5 - CommonDLSS 3.1.1+ Forced DLSS 3.1 Preset, and select the hex value ending in 0x00FFFFFF.
    • Under Other:
      • Set Enable DLSS-RR Override and Enable DLSS-SR Override to 0x00000001.
    • Leave DLSS FG Override at default (all zeros) if you have an RTX 20/30 Series and are using the Frame Gen Mod (Explained in IslandSimPilot’s video).
    • If you have an RTX 40/50 Series, ensure Enable DLSS-FG Override is also set at 0x00000001.
  • Repeat the steps for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
    • Apply the same settings to its profile.
  • Click Apply Changes for both profiles.

Step 3: Verify DLSS 4 in-Game

  1. Optional Registry Edit:
  1. Launch the Game:
  • In both MSFS 2020 and 2024, check the lower-left corner for a DLSS status message. Here, you’ll want to see that Render Preset: K and DLSS v310.2.1 (nvapp_override) are being shown to confirm that you’ve correctly made the changes.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you’ll unlock DLSS 4’s performance enhancements in Microsoft Flight Simulator, whether you’re still on the 2020 version or living the cutting edge with the 2024 edition. While the process involves a few steps, it’s actually quite simple, and the payoff—higher frame rates and improved visuals—is well worth the effort.

Once again, a big shout out to IslandSimPilotTenPatrol, and Ianrivaldosmith, whose discoveries and explanations of the process make this tweak easy to understand and implement. Check out their respective contributions for additional insights and tweaks!
