Floyd’s Epic Clouds, once a small freeware experiment, is now a full-fledged payware add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. Available through Just Flight for $8.99, it introduces 75 handcrafted weather presets that aim to bring more variety and authenticity to the skies.
Back in 2022, we covered the original release: a small pack of six cloud presets that gave simmers variety in the skies without having to rely on live weather.
What was once a handful of presets has now grown into 75 hand-crafted weather setups, each designed to look natural, believable, and tested under different lighting and landscapes. Floyd has built in interdependent weather properties, which should mean that things like wind, temperature, precipitation, and pressure values are tied together in ways that mimic actual atmospheric behavior.
That might sound a little abstract, but in practice, it should mean that a preset isn’t just “broken clouds at 12,000 ft,” but rather a whole environment, tuned to behave in ways you’d expect if you were flying through it.
Floyd’s pack stands out with the inclusion of special environments that cater to specific simming experiences:
- Glider ridge lift and thermals for soaring fans
- Directional winds for hot air balloons
- Persistent rain, turbulent winds, and jet streams for those who enjoy more challenging scenarios
Once installed, the presets appear in the simulator’s weather selection menu, neatly sorted by cloud cover order with handy icons. They can sit alongside other cloud packs or weather utilities without interference, since Floyd’s presets are self-contained.
And importantly: these aren’t shader hacks or external injectors. They’re built with the sim’s own weather engine, which means no extra performance load compared to the default presets.
For long-time users, the move to payware might raise eyebrows — after all, this started as one of those “hidden gem” freeware add-ons. But considering the sheer scope of what’s now included (75 presets, tested, error-checked, and tuned for both MSFS 2020 and 2024), the $8.99 asking price feels more like a way to support the creator and a polished product.
Floyd’s Epic Clouds is available now from Just Flight for $8.99 USD, with full compatibility for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. Installation is straightforward, and Floyd’s own website provides additional guides and notes for those who want to get the most out of the presets.
