It’s been a packed week for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Between the rollout of Sim Update 3 and the EC135 helicopter, the team has tucked neatly into the list of releases for this week another free visual upgrade: City Update 12: Germany.
This latest update enhances seven urban areas across five German states, capturing everything from medieval cathedrals and trading hubs to modern ports and academic centers. If you’re planning low-and-slow sightseeing flights or just want more authentic cityscapes on approach, this release delivers a refreshed view of some of Germany’s most historically and culturally significant cities: Augsburg, Bremen, Dresden and Leuben, Kiel, Leipzig, and Münster.
A closer look at the cities
- Augsburg, Bavaria
Just west of Munich, Augsburg was founded in 15 BC and became a powerful commerce hub during the Renaissance. The update highlights its canal network, the Town Hall, and the Fuggerei, considered the world’s oldest social housing complex.
- Bremen, Bremen
With over 1,200 years of history, Bremen is both a cultural center and one of Europe’s most important port cities. Its standout landmarks include St. Peter’s Cathedral and Bremen City Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. - Dresden & Leuben, Saxony
Dresden, rebuilt after wartime devastation, is now known for its iconic Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace, and the Hofkirche. The inclusion of the borough of Leuben adds further coverage of Saxony’s capital. - Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein
Situated on the Baltic Sea, Kiel is famous for shipbuilding and its role as a major maritime hub. The update brings detail to landmarks like Kiel City Hall, St. Nikolai Church, and the port area that hosts Kiel Week, the world’s largest sailing event. - Leipzig, Saxony
Home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, Leipzig has long been a hub of publishing and education. Simmers can spot the Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument to the Battle of the Nations), along with St. Nicholas Church and St. Thomas Church. - Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia
Münster’s identity as a center of learning dates back centuries. Its historic core includes St. Paulus Cathedral and St. Lambert’s Church, both featured in this update.
City updates may not carry the same headline weight as new aircraft or major sim updates, but they quietly transform how familiar routes look and feel. Germany is already a popular destination for simmers thanks to its dense network of airports and diverse geography. With City Update 12, cross-country flights in Central Europe will now feel more authentic, and VFR pilots have plenty of new visual anchors to enjoy along the way.
City Update 12: Germany is available now as a free download for all Microsoft Flight Simulator owners via the in-sim Marketplace.
