Burning Blue Design releases Peterborough Conington Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator

The site was once a base for USAAF B-17s.

Burning Blue Design has added another British airfield to its growing collection of detailed sceneries for Microsoft Flight Simulator with the release of Peterborough Conington Airport (EGSF). Available now for both MSFS 2020 and 2024, this new scenery is priced at £8.95.

Peterborough Conington Airport, located in Cambridgeshire, carries a rich history that dates back to World War II. Originally constructed between 1942 and 1943 by the 809th United States Army Corps of Engineers, the site, then known as RAF Glatton, served as a strategic bomber base for the USAAF’s 457th Bomb Group, operating B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft.

After its brief tenure with RAF Bomber Command post-war, the airfield was decommissioned in 1946. Today, only a handful of its wartime structures remain, including a blister hangar and the original station water tower, alongside a memorial to the 457th Bomb Group. The former NE/SW runway has since become a public road linking the villages of Holme and Conington.

In the late 1960s, aviation returned to the site when two local companies used the remaining E/W runway and facilities to base small executive aircraft. Modern-day operations are now managed by Aerolease Ltd, offering avgas and Jet A1 fuel, a notable feature for such a small airfield that makes it a convenient stop for turbine-powered helicopters.

Burning Blue Design has recreated Peterborough Conington with its signature attention to detail, based on on-site surveys and the airport’s layout as of March 2025. The scenery includes:

  • Over 90 custom 3D objects with full PBR textures.
  • Animated hangar doors that close at night.
  • A fully custom windsock.
  • High-resolution, colour-corrected ground textures from Bing Maps, refined for realism.
  • Full custom night lighting.
  • Animated spectators who disappear after dark.

The scenery also features representations of notable resident aircraft, including the North American T-6G Harvard ‘Wacky Wabbit’ (G-BJST), operated by Warbird Experience, and the Rutan Long-EZ (G-RAEM).

Peterborough Conington Airport is now available for purchase directly from Burning Blue Design’s website.
