Orbx has just released MSFS Global Powerlines, a new add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 that replaces the simulator’s default power tower models with handcrafted 3D assets. Developed by Dmytro Krykunov—the indie creator behind HD Global Trees—this package aims to offer more realistic power infrastructure across the world, especially noticeable during low-level and VFR flying.
While the base simulator includes basic representations of power pylons, it lacks the detail and variety seen in real-world networks. MSFS Global Powerlines steps in to address that by introducing 19 unique tower models designed to better reflect regional differences. These new models replace the generic assets used in the default scenery, resulting in a more believable landscape without affecting performance.
If this all feels familiar, it’s because MamuDesign’s popular mod already added powerlines (and solar farms) across large regions, including the US, Europe, and Australia. That add-on does add wires and placement data using open-source datasets, but it’s more comprehensive—and potentially heavier.
The Orbx version, on the other hand, is focused on model quality. It doesn’t try to reinvent the placement system but rather improves what’s already there.
One key limitation to note: the add-on does not control the placement or orientation of powerlines. Instead, it works within the constraints of the simulator’s existing streaming data system. Any issues with pylon positions or alignment stem from the base sim and cannot be corrected by this product. According to the developer, manually adjusting placements would require more than 100GB of custom data—something that would significantly affect performance.
In some cases, wires are also intentionally omitted to avoid specific visual issues in MSFS 2020. Users who prefer to revert to default models or temporarily disable the add-on can do so using a built-in management tool.
