Backwood Studios, who have expertly crafted a selection of countryside airstrips in Microsoft Flight Simulator, have unveiled their latest scenery: Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America, along with nine airstrips within.
This release continues the developer’s tradition of delivering highly detailed and immersive environments, following their previous work as seen on Myakka Head Airstrip or Eddsfield Airfield. This time, Hells Canyon promises to be a backcountry playground with several remote airstrips nestled along the Snake River and in the uplands.
Featured Airstrips:
- Memaloose (OR) – A vital gateway for aerial firefighting operations in the Hells Canyon National Forest. This remote airstrip offers access to outdoor activities such as hiking and camping but is best suited for experienced backcountry pilots due to its challenging conditions.
- Dug Bar (OR) – A historic airstrip marking the 1877 crossing of the Nez Perce people. It is a prime location for camping and exploring the region’s history.
- Sluice Creek (OR) – Located east of Memaloose, this site is protected to aid the local environment. Pilots are advised to stay on designated areas to preserve the site.
- Big Bar (ID) – A key access point for backcountry adventurers and river enthusiasts, maintained by volunteers from the Idaho Aviation Association.
- Salmon Bar (OR) – A steep-walled canyon airstrip known for its narrow runway and turbulent air conditions, making it one of the most challenging locations in the package.
- Cache Creek (OR) – Featuring the steepest slope of all included airstrips, Cache Creek offers a peaceful and remote retreat. A restaurant, picnic area, and boat docking make it a great stop for summer adventurers.
- Pittsburg (OR) – A gateway to the Snake River, commonly used by anglers and hikers. This location also hosts one of the largest campgrounds in the region.
- Temperance Creek (OR) – A private airstrip primarily serving ranch operations and U.S. Forest Service administrative purposes.
- Lord Flat (OR) – Constructed in 1943 for emergency and administrative access, this airstrip is primarily used during hunting season and provides breathtaking canyon views.
Additional Points of Interest:
- Hat Point Lookout – The highest vantage point on the Oregon side of the canyon, offering beautiful views and a great location to stretch your legs with a rewarding hike.
Key Features:
- Meticulously crafted terrain and river modeling
- Custom 3D-modeled buildings, signs, and props
- Highly detailed lookout tower with walkable access
- Miles of hiking trails and drivable roads
- Dynamic animated windsocks
- Beautifully detailed campgrounds
As you can see, this has been built to offer one of the most comprehensive and immersive backcountry flying experiences in the sim to date, with plenty to keep you engaged and to test your skills. Given the remote and rugged nature of these airstrips, make sure your backcountry flying techniques are sharp before attempting any landings!
Backwood Studios’ Hells Canyon scenery is available now for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, priced at just around $15.00 USD through Orbx.
