FlightSim Studio (FSS) has officially announced the release date for their highly anticipated Boeing 727-200 Freighter add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The full public release is scheduled for August 6, 2024, at approximately 8:00 UTC.
This announcement comes as welcome news to simmers who have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this classic trijet since its initial reveal in June. While the release date is slightly later than the initially projected end-of-July target, FSS assures that this short delay will benefit users in the long run.
According to the development team, “This little bit of extra time will allow us to get some last-minute things into the release that we think you’ll enjoy (rather than releasing these as an update later).” This approach aligns with FSS’s goals of delivering a feature-complete product at launch, in contrast to their previous early access releases.
One notable change from the initial announcement is regarding the navigation systems. FSS had originally planned to include the GNS-XLS GPS in the initial release. However, they have opted to delay its implementation in favor of an enhanced Inertial Navigation System (INS). The GNS-XLS will instead be added as part of a free update, expected to arrive 1-2 months after the initial release and bugfixing cycle.
The Boeing 727-200 Freighter represents a significant departure from FSS’s recent focus on modern aircraft, offering simmers a chance to experience the complexities of operating a classic airliner. The add-on promises to deliver a highly detailed 3D model, authentic analog instrumentation, and challenging systems management that accurately reflects the trijet’s operation.
To assist users in navigating the aircraft’s complexity, FSS has incorporated user-friendly features such as an EFB-like clipboard for task management and a virtual crew function to help with checklists.
