FlightSim Studio AG has released the second entry in their new developer series dedicated to the upcoming Super27 expansion for the Boeing 727 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. While last week’s post focused on the engines, liveries, and initial cockpit upgrades, this latest update digs deeper into the systems and avionics enhancements that will set the Super27 apart from the base package.
TCAS integration
The Super27 brings a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) directly into the cockpit by combining it with the vertical speed indicator. Controlled via the transponder, the system supports traffic advisories, resolution advisories, and aural alerts. Notably, FSS says this instrument combo is not limited to the Super27 itself — it can also be enabled in the base 727 package, provided the expansion is installed.
Auto spoilers
A new auto spoiler function brings the 727 closer to modern Boeing jets. Pilots can now arm the spoilers for automatic deployment on landing, a feature that should help satisfy virtual airline report systems that often flag manual deployment as a missed item.
Dual DME navigation
For those who enjoy classic radio navigation, the expansion adds a dual DME setup that allows for accurate cross-bearing fixes. FSS illustrates this with a Carnival Air Lines example flight from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau: intercepting the inbound 301 radial of the Bimini VOR, crossing it outbound on the 108 radial, and then using a DME cross-check with Nassau VOR to identify the MUNIE IAF before flying the ILS 14. According to the team, this provides a precise, satisfying way to navigate without relying on moving maps or GPS.
EFIS suite
The highlight of the avionics upgrade is the optional Rockwell Collins EFIS-86C. Available via the clipboard, this setup replaces the traditional ADI and HSI with modern EADI and EHSI displays. Together with the dual GNS-XLS FMS and the new glareshield autopilot panel, the system provides full LNAV and VNAV capability, improved situational awareness, and a range of display modes including map overlays, wind data, groundspeed, and waypoint identifiers.
APS-85 autopilot
Alongside the EFIS, the Super27 will also introduce the Collins APS-85 autopilot. This system, mounted on the pedestal, offers independent yaw damper and autopilot controls, manual pitch and roll inputs, and mode selection via the glareshield. The APS-85 supports CAT II approaches, VNAV descent profiles, altitude capture, speed hold (IAS/Mach), and automatic go-around mode. FSS says the result is a more versatile and reliable automation backbone while preserving the aircraft’s classic handling.
