Birmingham Airport (EGBB) has a new home in Microsoft Flight Simulator thanks to UK2000 Scenery. Available now for both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, this rendition of the UK’s seventh busiest airport offers simmers a performance-focused option for one of the country’s most important aviation hubs.
Located just 8 miles southeast of Birmingham’s city centre, the airport has long played a central role in connecting the West Midlands to the rest of the world. Known originally as Elmdon Airport, it opened on 8 July 1939, only to be requisitioned months later by the Air Ministry during World War II.
The site became both an RAF and Royal Navy base, used for training and aircraft production. Civilian services resumed exactly seven years later, in July 1946, with steady commercial growth shaping the decades that followed. The unveiling of Terminal 1 in 1984 and Terminal 2 in 1991 marked major milestones, later consolidated into a single terminal in 2011 via the Millennium Link.
Further expansion came with the 2014 runway extension, stretching Runway 15/33 to 3,052 metres (10,013 ft), enabling long-haul operations and larger aircraft. Today, Birmingham handles over 12.8 million passengers annually (2024 figures), with airlines such as easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair, and TUI Airways using the airport as a base.
UK2000’s scenery is designed around a simple principle: prioritize smooth performance over interior exploration. The developer makes it clear that this isn’t an airport for walking through terminal coffee shops or slewing around to admire hidden details. Instead, it’s built for those who spend most of their time where it matters: on approach, taxi, and departure.
To achieve this, UK2000 uses tuned LODs, tested in VR where visual pop-in is most noticeable. At object detail settings of 80 or higher, transitions should be subtle enough that most won’t notice them.
That doesn’t mean the airport lacks substance. Key advertised features include:
- Full-detail buildings with PBR materials
- Realistic ground markings and a complete signage set
- Custom airport vehicles and static GA aircraft
- Animated jetways
- Fencing, vegetation, and lighting effects designed for day and night operations
The package requires installation of the free UK2000 Scenery Common Library, available from the UK2000 website or the MSFS Marketplace.
Birmingham Airport from UK2000 is available now via Simmarket, priced at just over £10.
The release of this scenery comes at a time when Birmingham Airport is already represented in MSFS at a very high standard. Pyreegue Dev Co.’s recent rendition has been widely praised for its cutting-edge visuals, future-layout modeling, and explorable interiors in MSFS 2024. Against this strong competition, UK2000 is offering an alternative, less about ultra-high detail, more about achieving excellent frame rates without sacrificing the essentials of a busy international hub.
