In March 2025, a camera 600 meters below the South Atlantic filmed a colossal squid alive in its natural habitat for the first time in history. The robot that shot the footage was launched from the deck of the Falkor (too), a 110-meter research vessel operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute. That same deck, helipad and all, has now made its way into Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Skylogic Labs has parked it in eight of the most photogenic places on the planet.
The Falkor Too Expedition Pack covers MSFS 2020 and 2024 and costs just around $5.00 USD. The location list promises incredible set pieces: Alaska, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand, Patagonia, Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, Bora Bora, and New Caledonia. Each site gets its own ICAO code, running from ZZFB through ZZFI, so you can spawn directly on the ship or set it as a destination in your flight planner.
The centrepiece is the fully operational helideck on the bow. The developer says the pack is aimed at scientific mission flying, cinematic filming, and general sightseeing, which is where I suspect most people will spend their hours. A research vessel anchored in Milford Sound or a Norwegian fjord is surely the kind of destination that gives a helicopter flight a compelling purpose.
Not the ship’s first appearance
Skylogic Labs already included the Falkor Too in their Abrolhos Archipelago scenery for Brazil, where it operates near the marine national park with its own landable helipad. This pack essentially takes that idea and turns it into a world tour, minus the Brazilian stop, which remains exclusive to the Abrolhos package.
It also arrives at an interesting moment for offshore flying in the sim. Aerosoft’s recently updated North Sea offshore landmarks package went deep on realism, with hundreds of rigs, ships, and heliports placed in their exact real-world positions. The Falkor Too pack is the opposite philosophy: a handful of handpicked postcard locations rather than a faithful industrial recreation. At $5.81 on Contrail, versus the considerably higher price of the Aerosoft package, it’s clearly aimed at a different kind of pilot, the one who wants a pretty place to land rather than an offshore career.
