German VFR flyers get a new home base as FlightSim Studio releases Airfield Detmold

Airfield Detmold follows April's well-received Warngau and gives VFR pilots a new home base in North Rhine-Westphalia, priced at around €8.

FlightSim Studio has been getting a lot of attention lately for its aircraft. Between the Tupolev Tu-154M reveal at FSExpo 2026 and the long-running push to get the E-Jets to their v1.0 milestone, it’s easy to forget that the Swiss studio also has a quieter, more low-key line of work: small European airfields. That side of the house just delivered again, with Airfield Detmold now available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Detmold, ICAO code EDLJ, is a regional airfield in North Rhine-Westphalia, sitting in the East Westphalia-Lippe region of Germany. It’s exactly the kind of destination this scenery is aimed at: not a hub, not a tourist landmark, just a proper German general aviation field of the sort that makes low-and-slow VFR flying in Europe so enjoyable.

This is FSS’s second German airfield release in only a few months. Warngau, a small field in the Bavarian Alpine foothills south of Munich, arrived in April with dynamic touches like hangar doors that open and close depending on the time of day, and the overall reaction was very good. Before that, FSS also covered Ganderkesee (EDWQ) in northern Germany, so a pattern is forming here. The studio itself says it is mostly focusing on small airfields in Europe on the scenery side, and Detmold fits that plan neatly.

As for what’s included, FSS lists carefully modelled buildings, hangars, and airfield objects, high-resolution ground, taxiway, and apron textures, plus custom vegetation and surrounding environment work. The scenery is built for MSFS 2024 specifically, and the developer says it makes use of the current simulator’s lighting, vegetation, and performance optimization features. There’s no MSFS 2020 version listed, which matches the direction FSS has been signalling across its whole catalogue since late last year: new work goes to the 2024 platform.

Pricing sits at around €8 including VAT, which puts it firmly in impulse-buy territory for anyone who flies GA in Germany. At that price, the value question mostly answers itself. If you enjoyed Warngau, or if small German aviation is your thing, this looks like an easy pick for the hangar, or rather, for your scenery library.

Airfield Detmold is available now on the Aerosoft store.
