When iniBuilds officially announced the L-1011 TriStar back in December 2025, the project already had the feel of something the team genuinely cared about rather than just the next item on a release schedule. The aircraft is rich in history, ahead of its time, and truly fascinating, and everything iniBuilds has shared since then has leaned into that character.
Now, with the latest dev update confirming a release later this month, we finally have a proper deep dive into systems, sounds, and artwork, and there’s quite a lot to cover.
We’ve been following this one since the announcement, covering the December reveal and the February systems update. This is the final piece before launch.
The virtual flight engineer
The L-1011 is a three-crew aircraft, and iniBuilds has made the flight engineer station one of the centrepieces of this release. Rather than leaving the engineer’s panel as a functional but passive backdrop, the team has built what they’re calling a Virtual Flight Engineer that can actively carry out “flows” for different phases of operation. Flipping switches, providing spoken callouts, and reporting back when tasks are complete, the system is aimed at giving solo simmers a genuine sense of a crew working alongside them.
For those who’d rather not manage the full panel, the Paper Flight Bag’s “Auto Complete” function handles the same tasks automatically, with audible switch sounds confirming each action. It’s a practical solution to one of the more daunting aspects of operating a classic three-crew widebody in a single-pilot sim environment.
Cabin crew feedback has also been included, reacting dynamically to flight phases from departure prep through turbulence to arrival. It’s a detail that adds to the sense of operating a fully crewed aircraft rather than an empty shell.
Navigation: four ways to fly it
As we’ve covered previously, the TriStar offers four navigation configurations through the Paper Flight Bag: RADNAV, INS, GPS, and INS combined with GPS. Each option changes how the aircraft operates at a systems level. The Performance Management System and its advanced VNAV capability, for example, are only available when an INS-based option is selected. Pure RADNAV or GPS disables the PMS entirely.
The moving map display, historically fitted to some Saudi Arabian L-1011s, has been repurposed here as a SimBrief integration tool. It draws up to nine current INS waypoints and displays the aircraft’s assumed position based on INS data. The team notes that if you initialise the aircraft incorrectly, it will think it’s somewhere else entirely, which is exactly how the real system worked.
Sounds from the real thing
Sound development is being handled by Echo19, who recorded audio directly from an operational L-1011. Tyler from Echo19 visited the TriStar Experience in Kansas City, Missouri, capturing everything from engine behaviour to cockpit ambience and cabin airflow directly from the aircraft. The result, according to iniBuilds, is a sound suite built on authentic source material, covering the distinctive character of the Rolls-Royce RB211 through to the subtle sounds of cockpit systems.
The cabin, the lounge, and the cargo bay
The passenger cabin has received significant attention. The vaulted ceiling, a distinctive feature of the TriStar resulting from the absence of overhead baggage compartments, is accurately modelled, along with seating layouts, interior panelling, and galleys. Lighting uses period-appropriate incandescent-style illumination rather than the cool LED tones found in modern aircraft, which gives the interior a noticeably different quality.
The lower lounge is included as an optional configuration. While the -500 variant didn’t typically operate with the lounge installed, iniBuilds has modelled it with a spiral staircase connection to the main cabin, seating areas, and a bar-style layout. The cargo bay surrounding the lounge structure is also modelled in detail, covering structural framing, cargo floor panels, and the lower deck environment.
The POD variant
One addition that hasn’t received much attention is the POD variant. This configuration includes both a visual modification and changes to the flight model, with the external pod altering aerodynamics and weight distribution. The developer says the maximum operating altitude is limited to FL340 on this variant, with a reduced VMo of 270 KIAS, and reduced thrust takeoffs are not permitted. ATS use during final approach and autoland is also prohibited. Fuel distribution requirements are revised, with tank 1 required to be heavier than tank 3. It’s a niche configuration, but one that should offer a genuinely different operating experience.

Liveries and launch details
At launch, the TriStar will include liveries from British Airways, Saudia, TWA, Delta, Pan Am, United, LTU, Cathay Pacific, Royal Jordanian, Air Transat, Novair, and others.
The aircraft will launch exclusively through the Microsoft Flight Simulator in-game Marketplace, with an iniManager version confirmed for a later date. No price has been announced yet.
