The transition between Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and the newer 2024 version has created a unique crossroads for add-on developers. While many teams have shifted their focus entirely toward the new engine, Carenado is taking a different path by ensuring their latest releases remain accessible to those who haven’t yet made the platform switch. Following its release for MSFS 2024 just last month, the T-34B Mentor has now officially arrived for MSFS 2020.
Carenado has a long history of filling the “light military” niche with aircraft that sit comfortably between complex study-level machines and basic default planes. The Mentor fits this role perfectly as a primary trainer that served the U.S. Navy and Air Force for decades.
Carenado says that this recreation focuses on the aircraft’s character and distinctive cockpit environment. While the Mentor is a vintage military machine, the developer has equipped it with features that make it practical for modern virtual flying. This includes a flexible avionics suite and a tablet-style interface for selecting navigation systems like the GNS or GTN.

The aircraft works like a bridge for pilots who enjoy the aesthetic of a classic warbird but require the reliability of modern navigation for cross-country trips. The developer says the flight dynamics are realistic and the cockpit experience is heightened by high-quality digital sounds recorded from the actual aircraft. In this 285-horsepower configuration, the Mentor offers a climb rate of over 1,200 feet per minute and a cruise speed averaging around 145–150 knots.
What to expect in the cockpit
The T-34B in MSFS 2020 maintains the high visual standards typical of Carenado’s aircraft releases. Beyond the flight deck, the developer has included a functional canopy jettison system, which adds an interesting twist to this particular add-on.
For those looking for variety, the package comes with eight liveries plus a plain white version, reflecting both its military heritage and its life as a popular civilian restoration. It is a straightforward addition for any pilot who wants a stable, well-behaved trainer that looks as good on the ramp as it does in the air.
The T-34B Mentor is available now in the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2022 Marketplace for $22.99 USD.
