While Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has made massive strides in procedural terrain generation, it still struggles with one specific element of nature: water in motion. For low-altitude explorers, nothing breaks immersion faster than flying over a legendary cascade like Dettifoss only to see a frozen, flat texture plastered against a cliff.
Cli4D Designs has released Waterfalls of Iceland for MSFS 2024 to address this gap, applying his signature animation techniques to bring movement and sound to the region’s most famous cascades.
Fresh off his work in Yosemite and Switzerland, Cli4D has now turned to Iceland with a comprehensive scenery package that targets the “static world” syndrome by injecting dynamic animations, roar, and spray into the Land of Fire and Ice. For helicopter pilots and bush flyers, this is adds a necessary layer of life for one of the simulator’s most striking regions.
The “low and slow” specialist returns
Cli4D Designs has established a specific niche in the flight simulation scenery development market: correcting natural scenery elements that satellite imagery often mishandles. Whether it’s bears in Yosemite or swaying palms in the Philippines, his work creates a reason to fly below 500 feet.
With Waterfalls of Iceland, he is applying that same philosophy to the Nordic landscape. The default simulator often renders waterfalls as static glitches… strange, stretched textures that look unnatural up close. Cli4D’s solution replaces these with custom 3D models and animated particle effects, ensuring that when you bank your XCub around a canyon, the water actually looks (and sounds) like it’s crashing down.
What’s Included?
The package covers a mix of major tourist landmarks and remote locations, fixing some of the most glaring omissions in the default scenery. Notable standouts include Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, which has been updated to capture the sheer volume and spray intensity of the real site.
Pilots looking for technical challenges will also appreciate the work done at Seljalandsfoss, where the cliff geometry has been adjusted to allow flight behind the falling water, replicating the famous pedestrian path.
The update also addresses the visual fidelity of Hengifoss, ensuring the country’s iconic red strata cliffs are properly modeled rather than flattened by default mesh data.
