A tri-jet renaissance? TFDi MD-11 “definitive edition” launches for MSFS 2024

A complete visual overhaul, native MSFS 2024 features, and a $5 upgrade path make this a landmark release for heavy metal fans.

If 2025 was the year of the Airbus, 2026 is kicking off to be the “Year of the Tri-Jet.”

Just days after FlightSim Studio completed its Boeing 727 fleetTFDi Design has officially launched the MSFS 2024 version of their MD-11. Described by the developers as the “definitive edition” of the iconic airliner, this is a comprehensive overhaul that leverages the native features of MSFS 2024, bringing one of aviation’s most complex and unforgiving airliners up to modern “virtual” standards.

A “Definitive” Visual Overhaul

The most immediate change pilots will notice is the exterior. TFDi Design has completely discarded the old model in favor of a scratch-built mesh.

This update directly addresses the feedback from the previous release, bringing the visual fidelity in line with the high standards of MSFS 2024. The new model supports the simulator’s native pre-flight walkaround mode, allowing pilots to open engine cowlings, inspect landing gear bays, and interact with ground service ports just as they would in the real world.

Inside, the attention to detail continues. The developers have simulated the specific warm-up behavior of the CRT displays, mimicking the way the screens flicker and shuffle as the Display Electronics Units (DEUs) come online. A small but immersive touch that sets the tone for the simulation.

Systems Depth

Under the hood, the MD-11 remains a beast. The add-on features a comprehensive simulation of the aircraft’s unique automation, including the LSAS (Longitudinal Stability Augmentation System) and the optional RCWS (Roll Control Wheel Steering).

For those who want to push the aircraft to its limits, the Extended Simulation Package (available as a separate add-on) unlocks over 160 failure scenarios. These are specific, manageable emergencies ranging from hydraulic leaks to complex electrical failures, all manageable via an in-sim tablet.

Just $5 to upgrade

Perhaps the most significant aspect of this release is how TFDi Design is handling the transition to the new platform.

In an era where expensive re-releases are becoming common, the team has introduced a $5 upgrade path for existing owners. This “loyalty discount” allows veteran pilots to bring their hangar into MSFS 2024 without breaking the bank.

For newcomers, the pricing structure remains modular, allowing you to pay only for what you fly:

  • Base Package: $74.99 (Choose either Passenger or Freighter).
  • Variant Expansion: $9.99 (Adds the other body type).
  • Extended Simulation: $4.99 (Adds failures and maintenance).

This “A La Carte” model means you can get a high-fidelity aircraft for roughly $75, or the complete package for just under $90.

Between the classic charm of the 727 and the modern systems depth of the MD-11, the tri-jet era in MSFS 2024 has never looked stronger. Simmers now have a high-fidelity option for every kind of three-engine mission, whether it’s a short-hop passenger run or a long-haul cargo slog. The old-time heavies are back!

The TFDi Design MD-11 is available for purchase now at the official TFDi Design Store and also at Contrail.
