Here’s the first Pilot-Controlled Lighting system for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

VeroRoutes recreates one of aviation’s most overlooked systems, giving simmers real control of runway lights at night.
by Vasco Ferreira

VeroRoutes has introduced a new utility for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 that brings a long-requested feature to the sim: Pilot-Controlled Lighting (PCL). The add-on simulates the real-world system that allows pilots to activate and adjust runway lighting at untowered airports via their aircraft radio. It’s a first for the MSFS platform!

In real-world aviation, PCL enables pilots to control airfield lighting by keying the microphone a specific number of times on a designated frequency. It’s a common feature at smaller or unattended airports, where it allows safe night operations without permanent lighting.

VeroRoutes’ new add-on brings that same concept to over 4,500 airports and heliports worldwide in MSFS 2024. The developer says lighting systems are off by default and can be activated by pressing the push-to-talk key three, five, or seven times within five seconds, matching the real-world procedure:

  • 3 clicks: Low intensity
  • 5 clicks: Medium intensity
  • 7 clicks: High intensity

Once activated, the lighting remains on for 15 minutes before automatically shutting off. During that time, pilots can change brightness levels using the same mic-click method. The system simulates runway edge, centerline, threshold, and approach lights, and can also be controlled remotely via SimConnect variables, opening the door to potential third-party ATC or multiplayer integration.

This is a brand-new release, and there are no reviews yet, so your best bet is to take advantage of the free trial offered through the VeroRoutes website and see how it works before committing to a purchase.

Pilot-Controlled Lighting for MSFS 2024 is available now on SimMarket for around $20.
