SamScene3D has just expanded its growing catalog of urban scenery packages with a new release for Japan: Tokyo City Times. Available now for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, this latest project takes a fresh look at one of the world’s most complex cityscapes and attempts to bring more structure and detail to MSFS’s already impressive photogrammetry.
Priced at €16.49 (excl. VAT) through the Contrail store, Tokyo City Times is being described by the developer as a redesign of the Tokyo and Yokohama metropolitan area. Instead of replacing everything, SamScene3D says the aim is to refine what’s already there, fixing textures, correcting structures, improving bridges and rivers, and adding back missing buildings and landmarks.

This release builds on the team’s earlier Tokyo Landmarks Enhanced, but it’s a complete standalone package. Owners of the older product don’t need to have it installed. Among the key features are:
- Over 500 handcrafted models across Tokyo and Yokohama
- Expanded coverage around Haneda Airport, including many custom buildings
- High-detail Tokyo districts with JR stations and their shopping centers: Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ginza, Ueno, Roppongi, Osaki, and Shinagawa
- Famous landmarks such as museums, malls, towers, plazas, universities, banks, hospitals, and hotels
- Night lighting effects tailored for the city’s skyline
- Unique touches like missing windmills restored to the Tokyo area
- Landable rooftops for helicopter pilots
- Bonus content covering Yokohama city, complete with its own landmarks
- Animated 1:1 Gundam in Yokohama Bay, modeled after the real-world version that has already been closed

Tokyo has been part of MSFS’s photogrammetry coverage since the Japan World Update, but default data often leaves gaps, like missing towers, flat-textured stations, and broken bridges. SamScene3D’s approach is to make MSFS’s photogrammetry look the way it should, while layering in hand-built models where the base sim falls short.
The developer has published a set of before-and-after comparison shots that make the differences clear. You can see those comparisons here: Tokyo City Times vs. default scenery.
