Commercial Simulation Systems (CSS) has announced a major update for its 737-500 Classic add-on, version 1.4.6, bringing expanded accessibility through a new distribution channel and initial support for MSFS 2024. This update also introduces new visual customization options and further system refinements.
Perhaps the most impactful news for simmers is the immediate availability of the CSS 737-500 on simMarket. This move makes the aircraft more accessible to a wider audience, especially those who prefer to purchase on well-known platforms. All three existing license tiers—monthly ($5.00 USD), annual ($50.00 USD), and permanent ($120.00 USD)—are now offered through the popular flight simulation storefront.
SimMarket customers will receive a license key for activation within the CSS Launcher, integrating seamlessly with the existing system.
The pricing model, which includes both subscription and permanent license options, has been a unique aspect of CSS’s strategy from the outset. While the $5 monthly option has been seen by some as a low-cost entry point or trial, the $120 permanent license has previously drawn criticism for its perceived high cost relative to the product’s initial quality.
Experimental MSFS 2024 Support
With the latest update, CSS has also released an experimental version of the 737-500 with support for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This early release is available to all existing MSFS 2020 users at no additional cost, a commitment CSS has maintained since the product’s initial announcement. While the 2024 version shares the same system depth as its 2020 counterpart, it promises improved performance due to MSFS 2024’s enhanced multithreading capabilities.
CSS says that this experimental build comes with known issues, specifically mentioning low sound volume and incompatibility with the simulator’s Walkaround Mode. The developer advises users who prefer a bug-free experience to continue using the MSFS 2020 version until the full, stable release for MSFS 2024.
Visual and System Enhancements in V1.4.6
Version 1.4.6 introduces several notable improvements and new features to the 737-500. Visually, simmers can now opt for optional eyebrow windows and winglets, enhancing the aircraft’s customization options. It’s important to note that the winglets are currently purely cosmetic, with a proper flight model integration planned for a future update. Other visual enhancements include optional fluorescent main panel lights, missing light emissions in the virtual cockpit, and a complete rewrite of the exterior lighting system. Fuselage texture mapping has also been adjusted to accommodate the new eyebrow windows.
On the systems front, CSS has addressed a critical bug where entering gross weight on the PERF APPR page would break the CDU’s scratchpad. Engine parameters have been significantly tuned, and low-speed behavior has been improved to ensure a stall won’t occur without the stick shaker already blaring. The update also includes various fixes for FMC path calculations, electrical systems, and cockpit lighting, alongside general engine performance improvements.

CSS has reiterated its commitment to ongoing development, confirming that work continues on improving the aircraft’s sound environment in collaboration with a “well-known professional in the sim sound industry.” This addresses a point of past community feedback, where initial sound design was described as bland. Furthermore, the developer teased upcoming progress on other 737 variants, including the 737-300, -400, and their freighter versions, which are promised as free additions for permanent license holders.
