The team at REX Simulations has announced Atmos CORE, their next-generation atmospheric enhancement tool for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Building on the foundation of the original REX Atmos for MSFS 2020, Atmos CORE promises full compatibility with MSFS 2024 while introducing refinements aimed at even more granular control over the visual environment.
According to the developers, REX Atmos CORE has been rebuilt for MSFS 2024’s revised rendering and weather systems. The tool retains its signature feature: real-time adjustments to the simulator’s atmosphere without modifying core files. Users will be able to control haze, sky colors, cloud shading, ozone levels, and Rayleigh scattering on the fly, with changes immediately reflected in the sim.
Another area of interest is performance. Atmos 2020 was praised for its negligible FPS impact, and REX has reassured users that Atmos CORE is being developed with the same efficiency mindset.
One may wonder whether a tool like Atmos CORE remains necessary now that MSFS 2024 has overhauled atmospheric rendering. REX counters this by positioning CORE as a visual customization layer, enabling simmers to adjust the environment to personal preferences rather than accept Asobo’s defaults.
Release timing and pricing
The announcement, teased in late June, had some hopeful that Atmos CORE would launch on July 22. Instead, REX used the date to showcase the product’s existence and a single early screenshot. The development team clarified on their Discord that Atmos CORE’s initial release build is in testing, meaning they are putting the near-final version through its paces before launch.
As for pricing, Atmos CORE will be sold as a separate product, but existing REX Atmos customers can expect a discount. Exact pricing and upgrade details are still pending, but REX confirmed that “Existing users will absolutely be supported and rewarded.”
While there’s no confirmed release date, the product is already in testing of its release candidate. This may indicate a launch within weeks, but REX has not committed to a specific timeline, likely to avoid overpromising.
In the meantime, the company plans to release additional previews, including UI screenshots and more before-and-after comparisons, to provide users with a clearer picture of what to expect.
