SimWorks Studios prepares to launch the GA8 Airvan for Microsoft Flight Simulator

“When is it coming out?” Many have asked. The wait is almost over!

SimWorks Studios is gearing up for the release of its next aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator: the GA8 Airvan. This rugged Australian-built utility aircraft will debut in its MSFS 2020 version on June 26, launching first through the in-sim Marketplace. A native MSFS 2024 version will follow at the end of July, alongside a standalone release of the MSFS 2020 version on the SWS website.

SWS has taken a slightly unconventional approach with this launch. Marketplace release comes first, not due to convenience or distribution strategy, but because of compatibility with Microsoft Flight Simulator’s Career Mode—a feature that, for now, only supports Marketplace purchases. The team says it is working with Microsoft and Asobo to explore options for bringing Career Mode functionality to customers who prefer buying outside the Marketplace.

Despite a bumpy development journey that saw the project restarted three times, the Airvan is finally nearing the runway. The systems, engine, and flight model have been mostly complete for nearly two years, with work held up by challenges related to the aircraft’s 3D model. Now, the final touches are underway: sound integration is wrapping up, tablet functionality is being finalized, and the last steps include AI sounds and the paint kit—expected soon for livery creators.

“When is it coming out?” Many have asked. The wait is almost over!

But what truly sets this aircraft apart is what SWS calls a “failure and persistence” system. Available as an optional expansion pack, this module brings more than 70 failures into the sim, ranging from basic electrical faults to complex cascading systems breakdowns. Environmental conditions like altitude, temperature, humidity, and operational habits affect wear and tear. Oil starvation, propeller damage, even individual cylinder misfires are simulated. The aircraft tracks flight time and real-world calendar time, so it ages whether you fly it or not.

This deep simulation extends to visual degradation as well. Aircraft left outside without flying will accumulate grime, while overuse or improper operation can lead to mechanical issues. For those who enjoy preflight checks and long-term aircraft ownership in the sim, this is a rare level of immersion.

The GA8 will be available in multiple configurations, including commuter and cargo variants, powered by a non-turbocharged Lycoming IO-540. The initial release includes an autopilot (KFC 225), following feedback from the community during development. Though avionics options are somewhat fixed due to certification limitations, the team has steered away from less realistic suggestions, such as a G3X, in favor of more plausible systems like the Aspen EFD1000 and Garmin G500. While both versions offer the same systems and core features, the MSFS 2024 release will include more refined visual weathering effects, thanks to that simulator’s improved shader capabilities.

The Airvan arrives not only as a new aircraft but also as a testbed for features coming to SWS’s flagship products, such as the Kodiak and PC-12. The wear-and-tear system is expected to be rolled into those aircraft in the future.

The GA8 Airvan may not have the mainstream appeal of a Caravan or Kodiak, but it fills a notable gap in the MSFS hangar—a capable, affordable utility aircraft used worldwide for everything from skydiving to medevac, often in remote or rugged environments.

Whether you’re here for bush flying, maintenance realism, or just something a bit off the beaten path, the Airvan might be worth watching as it finally prepares to touch down!
