iniBuilds has unveiled its next aircraft project for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and this time it’s a twin-engine utility turboprop with a story to tell. The F406 Caravan II, developed with extensive real-world access and firsthand pilot experience, is shaping up to be one of the studio’s most purpose-driven aircraft yet. Compatible with both MSFS 2020 and 2024, the iniBuilds F406 aims to simulate a wide range of real-world operations — from coastguard surveillance and cargo hauling to environmental response and passenger flights.
This project began with deep personal roots. Mike Standen, iniBuilds’ Head of Production and a former commercial pilot, once flew the F406 for the UK-based RVL Group. His familiarity with the aircraft, combined with rare access to operational models at RVL’s East Midlands Airport base, gave the team a strong foundation for development.

iniBuilds visited RVL multiple times to 3D scan the aircraft and collect detailed references. They even interviewed RVL’s Chief Pilot, Harry Shaw, for further insight into the aircraft’s handling, systems, and quirks. That attention to detail has translated into several mission-specific variants of the F406, each equipped with tailored interiors, exteriors, and functionality.
Versatility at its core
The F406, originally developed by Reims Aviation and based on the Cessna 404 Titan, is powered by twin Pratt & Whitney PT6A-112 engines and is known for its STOL capabilities. iniBuilds’ rendition embraces that versatility through five distinct configurations:
- Passenger – standard cabin for regional shuttle operations
- Cargo – dynamic loading system reflects payload adjustments in real time
- Surveillance – includes a fully animated gyro-stabilised camera and interior ops station
- Coastguard – equipped with SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar) and AIS (Automatic Identification System)
- Spray – configured for environmental missions such as crop dusting or pollution control
Each variant includes functional systems to support its role, so they are not just cosmetic versions. For instance, the surveillance version allows simmers to track GPS survey lines and operate a camera that automatically adjusts its angle in response to aircraft pitch and roll. The coastguard model includes simulated ship-tracking and radar pulse detection for maritime search operations.
Modern avionics and operational fidelity
On the technical side, iniBuilds is equipping the F406 with a fully integrated GTN 650 suite (compatible with Asobo, PMS, and TDS versions), a modern EFB with Navigraph support, dynamic payload controls, and door/window interactivity. The aircraft also features a custom autopilot tailored for single-pilot ops, which is how the aircraft is most commonly flown in real life.
The electrical system includes functional circuit breakers, and cockpit lighting is individually adjustable with rotatable stalks. Real-world scanning ensured accurate modelling, including custom fowler flaps, realistic propeller animations, and exterior servicing features.
A soundscape by Echo 19 Audio
As with many recent iniBuilds aircraft, sound is being handled by Echo 19 Audio. The F406’s sound suite will include detailed recordings of the PT6A turbines and McCauley 3-blade propellers, along with environmental sounds, cabin interactions, and mechanical effects that respond to pilot inputs and aircraft movement.
MSFS 2024 compatibility and Career Mode integration
The F406 has been built with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s new Career Mode in mind. According to iniBuilds, the aircraft will support multiple mission types — including VIP transport, cargo runs, and environmental ops — which could play well with MSFS 2024’s expanded mission framework.
While the iniBuilds team hasn’t announced a specific release date, they confirm that the aircraft is nearing launch and will be handed to streamers and content creators “very soon.” An in-depth tutorial video is also in the works.
