Now that the initial launch day issues with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 seem to be mostly behind us, and you’ve likely gotten a good feel for how the simulator runs in its default state, this might be the perfect time to start exploring how your existing MSFS 2020 add-ons fare in the new sim.
Before diving in, it’s essential to ensure that the developers of your add-ons have explicitly stated compatibility with MSFS 2024. If they’ve confirmed this, you should be in the clear to test the add-ons without expecting major issues. Once you’ve checked compatibility, you’re ready to transfer those files to the MSFS 2024 Community folder.
But where is that folder in this new version?
Default Community folder locations in MSFS 2024
As in MSFS 2020, the location of the Community folder in MSFS 2024 depends on whether you installed the simulator through Steam or the Microsoft Store/Xbox App. Here are the default paths:
- Microsoft Store/Xbox App Version:
C:\Users\YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Packages\ Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community - Steam Version:
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Community
Note: Replace [YourUsername] with your actual Windows account name.
Changing the Community folder location
If these default paths don’t suit your setup (for instance, if you installed the simulator on a different drive but the Community folder defaulted to your C: drive), MSFS 2024 now allows you to change the folder’s location directly from within the simulator itself.

Here’s how:
- Launch MSFS 2024.
- Navigate to the Marketplace section.
- Click on My Library in the top-left corner. This is where you can manage your content library and make adjustments.
- Look for the small cogwheel icon next to the search bar (not the larger cog by your username).
- Click on this icon to open a settings pop-up.
- From here, you can select a new location for your Community folder.
For instance, if you’re using the Steam version and have the simulator installed on a separate SSD, you can create a folder named “Community” within your MSFS 2024 installation directory on that drive. Then, using the steps above, point the simulator to this new folder.
By following these steps, you’ll be ready to start testing your favorite add-ons from MSFS 2020 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024!
