The MSFS team continues to release new content updates for Microsoft Flight Simulator, even as they prepare for the big launch of MSFS 2024 later this year. Today, they introduced two significant updates that are sure to delight simmers: the Curtiss C-46 Commando as Local Legend 17 and City Update IX, which focuses on the northeastern United States.
Local Legend 17: The Curtiss C-46 Commando
Let’s start with the new aircraft, the Curtiss C-46 Commando, a legendary twin-engine, piston-powered military transport aircraft that has been recreated for Microsoft Flight Simulator by the development team at Aeroplane Heaven.
Designed by Curtiss-Wright, this aircraft became renowned for its versatility and ruggedness during World War II. The C-46 took its maiden flight in March 1940 and entered service with the United States Army Air Forces in 1941. It was celebrated for its ability to perform multiple missions, including freight transport, medical evacuation, and glider towing.
The C-46 Commando, which is based on Curtiss-Wright’s CW-20 airliner design, featured several advanced characteristics, such as a pressurized cabin and a high-strength fuselage. The CW-20 prototype’s success led to its adaptation by the Army Air Forces, which ordered the modified C-46 variant for cargo and transport use.
This version, unpressurized and equipped with more powerful engines and large cargo doors, entered service in 1942. Over 3,000 C-46 airframes were produced during its production run from 1940 to 1945.
The C-46 played a crucial role in several major operations during World War II, including Operation Varsity and the cargo flights over the Himalayas, known as “The Hump.” Its robustness made it invaluable in harsh environments, earning a place in the Korean War and clandestine missions during the Vietnam War. The U.S. Air Force retired the C-46 in 1968, but many of these aircraft remain operational in private hands today.
The virtual C-46 Commando for MSFS comes with four liveries: Japanese Air Self Defense Force, Olive Drab (Fictional), Blue (U.S. Navy), and USMIL. It’s available for purchase at $14.99 via the MSFS Marketplace, allowing simmers to experience this historical aircraft’s capabilities and legacy.
City Update IX: Northeastern United States
Simultaneously, the MSFS team has rolled out City Update IX, enhancing the northeastern United States with updated aerial imagery, new digital elevation models, and improved TIN surface texturing. This update brings a new level of detail to key locations, including Washington, D.C., Buffalo, New York, Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Long Island’s East End.
Washington, D.C.
The capital city, Washington, with its iconic landmarks and historical sites, now features enhanced visuals. This update covers the United States Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall, and surrounding areas, including parts of Maryland and Virginia.
Buffalo, New York
Buffalo’s update captures the essence of this city on Lake Erie’s shores, showcasing its significant structures such as the Peace Bridge, Rand Building, and Seneca One Tower. As the second most populous city in New York, Buffalo’s enhanced imagery offers simmers a vibrant urban experience.
Allentown, Pennsylvania
Allentown, nestled in the Lehigh Valley, is one of America’s oldest cities. This update highlights its historic and modern attractions, including Coca-Cola Park and the Malcolm Gross Rose Garden, providing a picturesque view of this eastern Pennsylvania region.
Long Island’s East End
The East End of Long Island, home to The Hamptons and the historic village of Southampton, now boasts improved visuals. Virtual pilots can enjoy the scenic beauty of its beaches, bays, and farmland, making it a perfect destination for exploration.
City Update IX: Northeastern United States is available for free on the Marketplace for all Microsoft Flight Simulator owners.
