Orbx releases NZ Mesh for MSFS, bringing improved terrain detail for New Zealand

Orbx has announced a new product series for Microsoft Flight Simulator, aimed at bringing improved terrain meshes for the sim. The overall goal is to provide more realistic terrain features and elevation so that landscapes look more defined and less rounded. The first product in this series, NZ Mesh, has just been released, and as the name implies it’s dedicated to New Zealand.

NZ Mesh was created from high-resolution detail elevation data. It currently recreates the terrain elevation at 10m resolution, but Orbx is planning future updates in order to bring a more refined 1m resolution for even more detailed terrain in both urban in rural areas. Obviously, the more irregular the terrain, the better you will notice the differences.

Orbx claims NZ Mesh doesn’t change anything in the default mesh data and has no noticeable performance impact. Additionally, Orbx promises consistent levels of detail at any distance, without the typical blurring and morphing we sometimes see with the default MSFS scenery.

Based on the comparison images released by Orbx, the differences between NZ Mesh and the default scenery are definitely not dramatic, although clearly an improvement. However, with the future planned resolution update based on LIDAR data, the improvements may become clearer. Still, it looks like a good enhancement for what is already an absolutely stunning country!

NZ Mesh is now available through Orbx Direct for $15.95 AUD | US$12.43 | €10,25 | £8.80
