Impulse Simulations has announced its latest addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator – Alice Springs Airport (YBAS). This release is an invitation from the developers to visit the Australian Outback, after launching other airports in the country like Canberra Airport and Adelaide Intl.
At Alice Springs Airport, you will find yourself amidst a vibrant array of colours and landscapes, from the iconic red dirt runways to the vast, awe-inspiring vistas stretching endlessly into the distance. Impulse Simulations has tried to capture the quintessential Australian Outback with great accuracy, in an environment that will challenge simmers with a variety of scenarios. From negotiating a steep descent over the MacDonnell Ranges to navigating through deep river valleys, and contending with unpredictable weather conditions, this airport offers an array of dynamic, skill-testing scenarios.
While the natural environment around YBAS is enough reason to explore this region of the Australian Outback, the airport itself boasts a detailed terminal, hangars, and ground vehicles, creating a bustling, lifelike hub of activity. One of the airport’s most distinct aspects is its role as an aircraft boneyard facility. Alice Springs’ dry and arid climate is perfect for preserving aircraft that for some reason are not in use, such as was the case during the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of that, you’ll see a lot of parked airliners at YBAS, which makes for an impressive sight in the vastness of the Australian Outback!
The impressive feature list includes realistic ground and apron texturing, convincing night lighting, and a partially replicated cafe interior for an extra dose of realism. Among the standout features are custom animations and door trigger animations for the Royal Flying Doctor Hangar and Alice Springs Aero Club Hangar. Impulse Simulations even implemented a custom event that takes place at a specific time on Wednesdays!
Over 100+ custom-modelled objects & buildings, custom taxiway signage, and a staggering 20,000 hand-placed objects perfectly showcase the attention to detail of the developers and the level of realism they attempted to achieve with this scenery. The official images speak for themselves. There’s a lot to see here!
