As promised a few weeks back, Aerial Simulations launched today its simulation of the legendary Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, the original stealth fighter and as much an incredible-looking machine today as it was 40 years ago, when it first flew for the USAF.
We’ve been following the increasingly-promising development of this new military airplane for Microsoft Flight Simulator, which features a very authentic model of the aircraft, including its unique fuselage and virtual cockpit.
The F-117 is one of the most unique-looking airplanes ever designed. Some say it looks straight out of a futuristic sci-fi world with its menacing looks, while others question its weird collection of polygons that some have called a “flying tent”. In either case, it’s unmistakable: nothing has looked like it before or after, which is another testament to Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division to explore new technologies and achieve breakthroughs on several fronts.
The F-117’s most distinctive feature is the pioneering stealth technology, which is achieved by the unique fuselage that reduces its radar signature to a minuscule size. However, this comes at significant aerodynamic costs, with the F-117 being known as a notably unstable aircraft that requires a lot of input from its onboard computers to stay aloft.
Aerial Simulations claims to have implemented an accurate flight model that follows the real-world numbers closely. Simmers should be able to experience the nerve-wracking approach speeds with this aircraft, landing fast and watching the parachute deploy behind to help break the aircraft.
The Aerial Simulations F-117 looks great and seems to be a nicely-detailed aircraft, so it’s definitely worth a look if you’re a fan of this iconic machine. It’s available now in the Marketplace, for both PC and Xbox, priced at just $19.99!
