MSFS Game of the Year Edition announced with 5 new aircraft, DX12, replay system, and more

It’s a huge announcement day for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with three major updates concerning various aspects of the whole experience. Sim Update 6, with a long list of changes and a few new features, was released today for PC and Xbox. Furthermore, the Reno Air Races expansion now has a release date and some exciting new details about what’s included. Finally, the MSFS team also announced today a GOTY edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator, in celebration of the success of the past 14 months and as a “thank you” note to all the fans.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Game of the Year Edition will be a FREE update once it lands on November 18th, and will include a bunch of new airplanes, airports, missions, and more.

The prospect of getting new airplanes is always a reason to get excited, and the GOTY edition of MSFS will bring some expected ones and also some new revelations. The first notable one will be the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, which was expected to come with the Top Gun: Maverick expansion. Since that DLC was delayed to next year (along with the movie), the MSFS team decided to present simmers with the opportunity to fly the aircraft this holiday with an earlier release.

Also coming with the GOTY edition will be the also previously unveiled VoloCity, an innovative rotorcraft that will pave the way for official helicopter support coming to the sim in 2022.

As for the other 3 airplanes, this is the first time we hear about them from the MSFS team. These are the Pilatus PC-6 Porter, a legendary STOL airplanes that was actually recently released for MSFS by Milviz; the CubCrafters NX Cub, a nosewheel option of the CC-19 XCub; and the Pitts Special S1S, a single seat version of the Pitts Special.

MSFS GOTY edition will also adding information about 545 previously missing airports in the US, along with 8 new airports across Central Europe and the United States:

Germany

  • Leipzig/Halle Airport (EDDP)
  • Allgäu Airport Memmingen (EDJA)
  • Kassel Airport (EDVK)

Switzerland

  • Lugano Airport (LSZA)
  • Zurich Airport (LSZH)
  • Luzern-Beromunster Airport (LSZO)

But this is not all. Recognizing the popularity of the recently introduced Discovery Flights, the GOTY update will also add 6 new locations (Helsinki, Freiburg im Breisgau, Mecca, Monument Valley, Singapore, and Mount Cook). 14 new tutorials will also be added to the platform to introduce pilots to bush flying and IFR flights.

Last, but not least, three highly requested features will also make their first appearance: an overhauled weather system, early access to DX12, and a long-awaited replay system!

Microsoft Flight Simulator Game of the Year Edition will be available as a free update to all existing users on PC and Xbox. As Microsoft phases out the previous standard version and replaces it with the new GOTY edition, new players will also enjoy the benefits of this new and richer experience.
